In a city that seems to never stop working, it’s important to know where to get your next caffeine fix. The area’s independent coffee shops are always ready to dispense fruit-forward pour-overs, flavored lattes, nitro cold brews, an
d pastries to their devoted neighborhood regulars.
A strong class of caffeinated contenders have entered the scene in recent years. That includes Cameo, which brews beans from Brooklyn roaster Parlor Coffee in a Southeast food hall, and Lost Sock Roasters, a wholesaler with a plant-filled cafe in Takoma. A new hot one to watch is Black Crown Collective on the Hill, a publicly accessible coffee shop curiously tucked inside the Cannon House Office Building. And downtown’s Dua Coffee just opened a cute new coffee bar inside Nasa’s Southwest headquarters.
Local favorites like Dolcezza and Pitango join Big Apple imports on the rise like For Five Coffee, Gregory’s Coffee, Maman, Blank Street Coffee, and Roasting Plant. Embattled local chain Compass Coffee, which filed for bankruptcy this year, just closed a sea of stores.
Here are 16 must-visit coffee shops in and around D.C., from Takoma to H Street to Old Town Alexandria. — Additional reporting by Emily Venezky
