The city of Antioch is examining new ways it could address gun violence. Council members on Monday night were scheduled to consider a set of recommendations that goes beyond identifying those most likely to use guns to commit crime, but to provide them with 18 months of intensive mentorship, job training and financial support to help them take a different path. “What you want to do is the deep work to build trust with these individuals to help them, understand that the resources are real to them and their families,” said Tamisha Torres-Walker, an Antioch city council member. A report by the Hope Heal Fund found Antioch has a higher rate of gun crimes than most cities of a similar size, with more than one gun used in a crime every day. The report includes 11 recommendations the group says could reduce crime by 20% to 55% in 18 months. Though gun violence was down last year in Antioch, the shootings of two innocent victims, including an 11-year-old girl this month are raising new worries. Torres-Walker said the strategies have worked in other cities and she thinks they will curb crime in Antioch as well.
