BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (WISH) — The Hoosiers took down the Boilermakers, 72-67, to win at home in the rivalry for the second straight year. Darian DeVries picks up his first win against Purdue in his first game in the rivalry. He was quick to credit IU fans, as Assembly Hall was rocking on Tuesd ay night. “I’m going to say the biggest key was that crowd out there,” DeVries said. “I mean, that was awesome. I mean, that’s what makes this place so special. When they’re making their run and our crowd kept willing us, you know, to keep fighting in every possession. So I want to thank this crowd for their efforts tonight, because that’s a huge deal in college basketball.” IU knocked down 12 threes in the victory, with Nick Dorn making four of them. He had 18 points in his second start for the Hoosiers. “It is always special just to be able to do this against Purdue in this environment, sold-out crowd,” Dorn said. “There’s nothing like it. I mean I could barely hear. I really enjoy playing in it.” Lamar Wilkerson led IU with 19 points. Wilkerson and Dorn were the only Hoosiers in double figures. Conor Enright was also big for the Hoosiers, adding eight points and eight assists while being the primary defender on Braden Smith. “I think the last couple of weeks we’ve been starting to play more for each other and playing hard together,” Enright said. “So obviously beating a rival like Purdue is big for us. And so I think, you know, propels us these past two wins, giving us good momentum.” As for the Boilermakers, it was their third straight loss. Head coach Matt Painter emphasized the need to play a complete game. “It gets frustrating, to be frank with you, because we have too good of a team, and if we just come in here and they play lights out, and they just knock our socks off, then that’s that,” Painter said. “That wasn’t the case. We have to do a better job. We got to find some guys that will do it for 40 minutes.” Trey Kaufman-Renn led Purdue with 23 points. Smith had 14 points, five rebounds, and five assists. This is a somewhat familiar spot for the Boilermakers. They had a losing streak of four games last season, with the last loss of the streak coming at Assembly Hall. “We’ve been through it and we understand how to get over that,” Smith said. “It’s on us from here on out to go and do that, especially with the team that we got and the type of caliber of players that we have.” Next up for Purdue is a road trip to Maryland. The Boilermakers tip off against the Terrapins at 1 p.m. on Sunday. The Hoosiers are back in action on the road against UCLA at 5 p.m. on Saturday. ...read more read less
