A suspected drunken driver was arrested Monday night for allegedly causing a spree of traffic wrecks that caused property damage and injured multiple bystanders in Vista, sheriff’s officials said.
The 32-year-old man was jailed on several charges after he allegedly plowed his pickup into a half do
zen other vehicles and various pieces of roadside infrastructure, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The 19 allegations he was booked on included suspicion of DUI, hit-and-run causing injury, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license and violating the terms of his probation.
The spate of roadway smash-ups began about 7:30 p.m., when the truck struck a parked car and a steel gate at an apartment complex on Oak Drive near Foothill Drive, Lt. Noah Zarnow said.
The driver then crashed the pickup into two other nearby parked vehicles and a fire hydrant before proceeding to drive on the wrong side of the road on Foothill, sideswiping a passing vehicle and forcing several oncoming motorists to get out of his way.
He then tried to pass vehicles over a set of double yellow lines, resulting in a head-on collision, officials said.
“In an attempt to flee this scene, (the driver) reversed and then accelerated forward, ramming the victim’s vehicle to push it out of the way,” Zarnow said. “The victim sustained injuries and was … treated (by paramedics) on scene.”
His pickup then struck an oncoming minivan, causing major damage to it and leaving its driver with minor injuries, investigators said.
Though by this point his vehicle had lost its front driver’s side tire and sustained other significant damage, the pickup continued on until it lost control one last time, Zarrow said. The truck veered off the roadway and crashed into a power pole in a neighborhood near Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, where deputies arrested the driver, authorities said.
