Shelterinplace order lifted for Naval Base San Diego
Jan 27, 2026
Naval Base San Diego was back to operations as usual following a brief shelter-in-place order Tuesday.
The U.S. Navy had directed Sailors to shelter-in-place around 10 a.m. due to a “hazardous situation.” Just before 11 a.m., an all-clear was given, although the Navy did not provide details
regarding what prompted the lockdown.
The shelter-in-place affected the west side of the base located near 32nd Street and Harbor Drive, according to a statement from Naval Base San Diego. All personnel were directed to seek shelter indoors.
Naval Base San Diego stretches about 326 acres along San Diego Bay, and is homeport to 60 Navy ships and the U.S. Coast Guard, according to the Navy. It is not clear how many personnel are typically on base within the area affected by the order: Gates 2-7 and Piers 1-5.
Naval bases across the U.S. were participating in a two-week training exercise called Citadel Shield-Solid Curtain, but there is no indication that the hazardous situation was related. Naval Base San Diego emphasized on social media the shelter-in-place order was “not a drill.”
This is a developing story. Details may change as information is released.
