RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — As snow and ice continue to blanket the River City, schools across Central Virginia will remain closed Tuesday, keeping children home and parents on high alert. Both Chesterfield and Henrico counties' schools will be fully closed on Tuesday, Jan. 27, while Richmond Public Schools will move to asynchronous remote learning. "What a lot of people tend to find when they're in their house for too long is that they start to feel like they're going into a darker place," said therapist Anna McChesney. McChesney, the CEO for the Center for Creative Healing and a mother, herself, said that having a plan and keeping structure are essential to help students stay focused and avoid feeling overwhelmed. McChesney said asynchronous learning can be beneficial for students, as it provides more structure than a day off. "The asynchronous gives at least that bit of flexibility," she said. "[But] I know a lot of parents kind of have, like, a PTSD response from COVID, of trying to maintain their own workload at the same time as corralling kids to do their own thing," she said. When creating a schedule, McChesney said it's important to include breaks from electronics and time for rest. Well, we talk about it ahead of time," she said. "Come up with a schedule … those times for relaxation, those times for rewards, and those are all laid out ahead of time, so that we all know what the expectations are." McChesney also said parents should reach out to school counselors if they notice their children struggling with mental health during snow days.
