OHIO (WOWO) – Bitter cold, gusty winds, and blowing snow are creating dangerous travel conditions across northern Ohio as Winter Storm Fern continues its grip on the region. The Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission is urging drivers to use extreme caution as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 11 a.m. Tuesday. Wind chills between 20 and 30 degrees below zero are expected in parts of north central, northeast, and northwest Ohio, while lake-effect snow is adding up to four inches in some areas. Officials warn that stranded motorists and anyone spending extended time outdoors could face frostbite or hypothermia in as little as 30 minutes. Pavement is icy and slushy in spots, especially on open stretches of the turnpike where blowing snow can sharply reduce visibility. Drivers are advised to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra travel time. Higher speeds raise the risk of losing control and make it harder to react to changing road conditions or snowplow operations. Turnpike crews have been working since Saturday night, using thousands of tons of salt and tens of thousands of gallons of liquid de-icer. Nearly 100 snowplows are available, and operators are working extended shifts to keep roads clear. Motorists are asked to give plow trucks plenty of space, staying at least 200 feet back and avoiding passing on the right. Officials also recommend traveling only when necessary and monitoring county-issued Snow Emergency Levels. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should pack warm clothing, blankets, food, water, and a phone charger in case of an emergency. The Ohio Turnpike also offers 14 service plazas for travelers who need to rest or warm up. For emergency assistance on the turnpike or statewide, motorists can safely dial #677.
