One beach access staircase has just reopened after months of repair work, but another one is about to close, the city announced Thursday. After a six-month repair project, the D Street staircase reopened for public use Wednesday. The staircase had been ordered closed on an emergency basis starting i n April 2025 after inspectors discovered significant structural issues. The stairs had been built in 1989 and renovated in 2002. Ultimately, the latest repair project ended up costing $1 million, including design and permitting expenses. “Work included fabrication and installation of custom steel brackets to reinforce structural connections, repairs to deteriorated components, and electrical and lighting improvements to enhance safety and usability,” the city’s press release stated. Though D Street is now open, the Grandview Beach staircase is about to close. Starting Feb. 3, it’s closing for several months so that contractors can refurbish it. The contractors currently expect to have that work done and the staircase reopened by May 25, “so it’ll be (open) before Memorial Day,” City Manager Jennifer Campbell told the City Council Wednesday. They’ll be replacing deteriorated timber throughout the structure, plus all the corroded steel hardware brackets, she said. They’ll also remove and replace the staircase’s shower platform, which allows beachgoers to rinse off before heading home. Located at the end of Neptune Avenue, the Grandview staircase was built in 1992, the city’s press release states. It needs repair work to “address longterm wear and preserve structural integrity,” it continues. The repair work is estimated to cost $900,000.
