The results were the same for the St. Thomas hockey teams on Saturday as they were on Friday, but they came with far less drama. The No. 16 Tommies men coasted to a victory at Lake Superior State, while the women were shut out at second-ranked Ohio State. Men: St. Thomas 5, Lake Superior State 0 Aft er needing a third-period surge to overcome the Lakers on Friday, the Tommies men got most of their scoring out of the way early in the rematch by scoring four first-period goals en route to a 5-0 win in Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. Lucas Wahlin got St. Thomas on the board with the eventual game-winning goal at 5:28 of the opening frame. Quinton Pepper doubled that edge 91 seconds later before Nathan Pilling closed out the period with a pair of goals at 11:02 and 17:47. Wahlin capped off the scoring with his second of the night at 11:55 of the third. Ryan O’Neil, who logged four assists in the game, was denied a late goal after a Lakers challenge for goaltender interference was held up on review. Aaron Trotter made 24 saves in earning a shutout win. St. Thomas maintained its lofty perch atop the CCHA standings with the win, improving to 16-7-3 overall and 13-3-2 in the conference. Lake Superior State fell to 9-16-1 overall and 6-12-0 in the circuit. The Tommies return home next weekend with a series against Michigan Tech at the Lee Penny Anderson Arena in St. Paul. Games on Friday and Saturday are both scheduled to start at 7:07 p.m. and will be broadcast on CCHA TV. The series could decide who claims the CCHA regular-season title, with the No. 19 Huskies just one game behind St. Thomas in the conference order at 17-8-2 overall and 12-4-2 in conference play after a shock 3-2 home loss to 2-24 Northern Michigan on Saturday night. Women: Ohio State 5, St. Thomas 0 The St. Thomas women’s hockey team couldn’t keep pace on the road with the Buckeyes, losing 5-0 on Saturday in Columbus, Ohio. The Tommies (10-16-0, 5-15-0 WCHA) had taken the Buckeyes to overtime on Friday night before suffering a 2-1 defeat. Nora Hannan had 31 saves in goal for St. Thomas on Saturday. The Buckeyes (23-3-0, 17-3-0) got goals from Jordan Petrie, Jocelyn Adams, Joy Dunne, Maxime Cimoroni and Sloane Matthews. The Tommies have a home series next weekend against No. 12 St. Cloud State.
