A man was rescued Saturday morning, Jan. 24, after his SUV became stuck on the edge of a cliff several hundred feet high along Highway 18 in Big Bear, authorities said.
At around 11:30 a.m., crews responded to reports of an SUV perched on the edge of a cliff near a turnout along Highway 18 near mile
marker 39.5, according to Eric Sherwin, a spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
The SUV had been pulling out of the turnout when it went over a berm and came to rest precariously on the cliff edge. Investigators later learned the driver had accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake, causing the vehicle to launch over the berm, Sherwin said.

The female passenger was able to exit the vehicle before emergency crews arrived and was not injured, Sherwin said. The male driver remained inside the SUV and was hesitant to remove his foot from the brake as firefighters worked to secure the vehicle.
Firefighters attached a chain from their engine to the SUV to stabilize it before assisting the man out of the vehicle. He was not injured, Sherwin said.
No other vehicles were involved, and no injuries were reported.
