NEW HAVEN, Ind. (WOWO) — New Haven Mayor Steve McMichael reflected on a year of progress and outlined priorities for the future during the city’s annual State of the City Address on Friday at the New Haven Community Center. Mayor McMichael reviewed key accomplishments from 2025 while offering a preview of initiatives planned for 2026, emphasizing continued growth, connectivity, and community well-being. Among the highlights was the launch of New Haven’s Designated Outdoor Refreshment Areas (DORAs), aimed at boosting local business activity and enhancing community spaces. The city also placed a strong focus on wellness with the creation of Community Health and All-Abilities coordinator positions. A citywide wellness survey was introduced to better understand residents’ needs, with results expected to guide future programs and initiatives. Economic development remained a central theme of the address. New Haven experienced more than $70 million in total investment across residential, commercial, and industrial projects in 2025. Ongoing developments include expansion at Gateway Apartments and new warehouse and distribution facilities along Linden Road and Rose Avenue. “A little over six years ago, I stood right here and said the twenties would be New Haven’s decade,” said Mayor Steve McMichael during the address. “Some folks laughed. But look around now, businesses are booming, families are moving in, and soon the District will bring thousands here for youth sports… Providing opportunities for current residents and visitors.” Mayor McMichael highlighted the announcement of New Haven NHEXT and the groundbreaking of a new field house at the New Haven District as milestones that reinforce the city’s vision of becoming a destination community. Infrastructure improvements were also showcased, including the completion of the latest segment of the Lincoln Highway Trail and the rollout of a Safe Streets for All survey focused on improving transportation safety. The city’s communication platform, Activate New Haven, continues to serve as a hub for updates on infrastructure projects, events, and city initiatives.
