Salem Reporter provides follow-up reporting on local criminal cases. Life sentence for murder of longtime girlfriend The original story: Tyler A. Holman, 40, of Salem was arrested in January 2025 after crashing a car in rural Polk County that he was using to carry the body of his longtime girl friend Ashley J. Gandolfi. Holman pleaded guilty earlier in early January to fatally shooting Gandolfi, his girlfriend of more than 11 years and the mother of his young daughter, Salem Reporter previously reported. The latest: On Jan. 14, Marion County Circuit Judge Channing Bennett sentenced Holman to life in prison for second-degree murder of Gandolfi. He will be eligible for parole after serving 25 years, the Marion County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement. Logan Wilkins, a man who pleaded guilty to helping move Gandolfi’s body after the murder, is scheduled to be sentenced next Wednesday, court records show. UGM stabbing case The original story: A Bend man, Tony L. Williams, 42, was arrested for the mass stabbing at Union Gospel Mission that left 12 people injured on a Sunday evening last June. About a month after his arrest, a Marion County judge found Williams unfit to proceed in the criminal case and ordered him to receive mental health treatment at the Oregon State Hospital.  The latest: Williams remains at the Oregon State Hospital as of late January and has undergone at least one psychiatric evaluation since he was found unfit to proceed, according to court records. A psychologist recommended Williams spend at least three months in the state facility, but he could remain there for up to a year under a previous federal court ruling. Last summer, Salem Reporter looked further into Williams’ history, which included repeat contacts with the criminal justice system, homeless services and mental health care. Four Corners shooting sentencing The original story: A shooting in the Four Corners neighborhood in 2023 left one man dead and two other people injured. Jose Raya-Lara, 31, was arrested 12 hours after the shooting, accused of killing his girlfriend’s former partner. Raya-Lara eventually pleaded guilty to the killing. The latest: Marion County Circuit Court Judge Tracy Prall sentenced Raya-Lara on Jan. 9 to life in prison for murder. He will serve a minimum of 27 years on charges that also included attempted murder and assault. Barber’s sexual abuse charges dismissed The original story: In 2024, a Salem barber, Eron Griffin, faced criminal charges accusing him of sexually abusing two teenage boys in 2022 and a third boy years prior. There was a separate criminal case against him, filed in 2023, that accused him of molesting teenagers during haircuts. The latest: Marion County Circuit Court Judge Sean Armstrong dismissed the 2024 charges against Griffin on Dec. 5, saying prosecutors failed to obtain key records in the case and provide them to Griffin, as required by law. The state is now appealing the dismissal, which, if successful, could reinstate the charges against him. Griffin pleaded not guilty in the 2023 case, which was dismissed in July 2024.
