RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) and the Virginia Hospital Healthcare Association (VHHA) have shared recommendations on how to stay safe during the rise of flu cases. In a press release shared on Thursday, Jan. 22, the VDH and VHHA offered ways to stay safe and seek appropriate care during the increase in flu cases this respiratory illness season. The 2025 to 2026 influenza season has seen rising cases in December 2025 and early January 2026, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has estimated that at least 18 million people have fallen ill, 230,000 have been hospitalized and 9,300 have died so far this season, according to the release. Due to the increase in flu and respiratory viruses, hospitals in Hampton Roads and Central Virginia have shared recommendations to the public about masking in clinical areas and other safety precautions during this season. The VDH has also shared recommendations on how to prevent sharing respiratory viruses in healthcare settings. It is encouraged to receive a vaccine for the flu, COVID-19 and RSV. As well as different hygine practice such as wearing a mask and regularly washing hands to prevent the spread of germs. There is also information on how to prevent respiratory viruses, along with an online data dashboard that tracks illnesses in Virginia. “VDH is monitoring the trends of influenza and respiratory illnesses across the Commonwealth,” said Virginia State Epidemiologist Laurie Forlano. “Influenza can have very serious health consequences, but there are simple steps people can take to reduce the risk for seasonal flu: get a vaccine, wash your hands, and stay away from others if you are sick. These things can go a long way to keeping your loved ones healthy and safe.” Most people who have the flu can recover at home with rest, hydration and over-the-counter medications and pain relievers, according to the release. If you notice flu symptoms and are at high risk of flu complications, call a healthcare provider for advice. Visiting the emergency room should be for true emergencies, such as a person having trouble breathing due to an illness, per the release. “Hospitals and healthcare providers across Virginia are prepared to care for those who need medical attention during the current respiratory illness season and throughout the year,” said VHHA President and CEO Sean T. Connaughton. “We all have a stake in our own health and wellness, which is why it’s important for people to take appropriate steps to limit their health risks and to select the appropriate venue for medical treatment in the event of an illness. That includes making informed choices about where to seek care for flu symptoms, which can often be safely and effectively managed in primary care settings, to help protect patients and providers and promote access to healthcare services during periods of high demand.” For more information, visit the VDH website here. ...read more read less
