INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The white-handed gibbon family at the Indianapolis Zoo has grown by one. On Jan. 10, white-handed gibbons Koko and Elliot welcomed a new baby, the zoo announced Thursday on Facebook. “Mom and baby are doing well and are spending quiet time together behind the sce nes,” the zoo said. This is Koko’s fourth offspring at the Indianapolis Zoo, joining big brother Echo. The zoo did not say if the newborn is a boy or a girl. White-handed gibbons are an endangered species native to Southeast Asia. These primates are apes, not monkeys, and have strong, hook-shaped hands and long arms that help them move from branch to branch by swinging hand-over-hand. Gibbon families are close-knit, and young gibbons stay with their parents for up to 7 years. Gibbons live to be more than 40 years old. Zoo guests who want to see the new baby will need to wait. Officials say the gibbons will remain off exhibit until temperatures warm up. ...read more read less
