A man was arrested Wednesday for repeatedly stabbing one straphanger and then beating another at a Bronx subway station, cops said.
Richard Shaw, 32, was charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery with a deadly weapon, assault with a weapon and a host of other charges for the savage June 19 at
tack.
The suspect was led out of the Transit District 12 station house on Morris Park Ave. on Tuesday night, where he appeared caught off guard by the media assembled outside.
“What is this?” a smiling Shaw blurted out, before bidding reporters “a good night” as he was put into an NYPD SUV.
His arrest comes less than 24 hours after police released surveillance images of the suspect, and requested the public’s help in tracking him down. Shaw was identified by the manager at an East Harlem homeless shelter where he’d been sleeping, according to a law enforcement source.
Shaw’s first victim, an 18-year-old man, was on the northbound No. 2 train platform at the Prospect Ave. station in Crotona Park East when the suspect approached him around 6:17 p.m., cops said.
The pair were arguing when Shaw drew a knife and attacked the victim, stabbing him in the back and slashing his neck and elbow, said police.
A 19-year-old man who witnessed the assault dialed 911 and was on his phone when Shaw attacked him as well, punching and kicking the older victim in an attempt to steal his phone, cops said.
Medics rushed the stabbing victim to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition, according to law enforcement. The elder victim refused medical attention at the scene, cops said.
Shaw had one prior arrest on record for an assault in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park, where he menaced a man with a knife before kicking him into a lake on April 25, cops said.
The Bronx attack was the second of three stabbings that occurred within hours of each other at city subway stations on Monday.
Earlier that day, a 16-year-old boy was slashed in the back of the head by a stranger who started an argument with him near the entrance of the Seneca Ave. subway station in Ridgewood, Queens, around 3 p.m. Monday, police said.
Medics transported the victim to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in stable condition. His attacker, described as a male with a light complexion and slim build, ran out of the station and has not been caught.
The NYPD released a photo of the suspect and asked the public’s help identifying him and tracking him down. He was wearing a black jacket, grey sweatpants and white sneakers
And just before 7 p.m., a 33-year-old man was slashed on the forehead at the Junius St. station in the Brownsville area of Brooklyn, cops said.
The victim was taken to Brookdale University Hospital in stable condition after the 6:54 p.m. attack, cops said.
Police are searching for a man in his 20s who was wearing a white shirt and carrying a blue shopping bag.
Anyone with information on any of the attacks is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
