Secondquarter surge lifts Hun girls basketball over Lawrenceville
Jan 21, 2026
LAWRENCEVILLE — For one quarter Wednesday at the Tsai Field House, it looked as though the Lawrenceville School varsity girls’ basketball team had caught up to their Mid-Atlantic Prep League rivals from the Hun School.
Then, the Raiders found their touch.
What had been as much as a five-point le
ad for the Big Red disappeared quickly as their guests went on a ridiculous surge that put Hun up by 18 points at the half. It would go on to be an 80-51 win for the Raiders, who drained 12 3-point field goals in the game.
Seven of those came during their 30-9, second-quarter run that began with a five-minute, 22-1 onslaught in which Hun (9-11) hit five of those treys.
“I don’t know what happened,” L’ville’s 5-foot-8 senior point guard Yijia Song said. “They just started shooting, and every one of them is a really good 3-point shooter.”
The 7-10 Big Red, with the area’s leading 3-point specialist in 5-7 junior guard Aryana Iyer, are not bad in that area themselves. This day they had to settle for hitting five from long distance.
“We just started to play together in the second quarter,” said the Raiders’ 5-8 senior guard Addi McNally, who had seven points, four rebounds and two assists during her team’s rally. “We started to look for better shots. When we’re on, we knock those (3-pointers) down.”
McNally, a Franklin Marshall commit who leads head coach Sean Costello’s team in 3-pointers made, hit two in the game to tie her with sophomore point guard Ava “A.J.” Carpenter and freshman guard Breezy McAlister. Sophomore guard/forward Jayla Williams and her classmate Meso Nwobu led the way with three treys apiece, which was matched by Iyer. All of Nwobu’s points came during the second quarter.
“I used to be more of an off-the-ball guard, but this year, I’ve been handling it more,” McNally said. “I don’t mind. I want to help get my teammates open and share the ball. Whatever gets us the win.”
McNally went on to score 12 points, making her one of four Hun players to reach double figures. Mary Tresler, a 5-11 sophomore forward, had a game-high 23 points with 15 rebounds, and Williams followed with 18 points and another 15 rebounds. McAlister scored 10.
“At halftime we talked about how we can’t leave their 3-point shooters open on defense and how we needed to box out,” said Song, who had 12 points for head coach Tripp Welborne’s team with Iyer scoring 17. “Our team is getting better. We have good chemistry.”
With junior forward Audrey Shueh and sophomore guard Talbot Card adding nine points apiece, Lawrenceville played better in the second half, but could not regain the ground lost in the second stanza.
With Nwobu adding nine points and Carpenter adding eight, the Raiders had more than enough offense to go around.
