A demand for change from thousands of America’s future voters.
Hundreds of Bay Area students joined others nationwide Tuesday in walkouts and protests marking one year since President Donald Trump began his second term in office.
More than 120 James Lick High School students in San Jose walk
ed out of school Tuesday to speak out against the Trump administration. They say they are not happy with President Trump’s call for stepped-up ICE enforcement. Some tell us they live in constant fear their parents could be taken by ICE and deported.
For many students, this protest is personal. “I’m like in fear my mom’s gonna get deported. She doesn’t have anything. How am I going to go to school? How am I going to do everything? How am I going to participate in my activities knowing that she might not be here?,” said Angelina Alvinez, a student.
Holding signs and chanting, the protesters marched on Alum Rock Avenue. While many are angry with President Trump’s efforts, administration supporters say the president’s immigration policy is one of his biggest achievements of this second term.
“I think the most obvious one is closing the border and stopping the flow of illegal immigration. I think that’s been the biggest win and it proved that he was right, we didn’t need new laws to stop immigration, we just needed a president who was willing to take action,” said John Dennis, California Republican Party chair of chairs.
Back on the streets, some students told us they are demonstrating on behalf of adults in their lives who are too afraid to protest because they fear deportation or retaliation by the administration.
“It’s impacting us because our parents came from Mexico and they’re here trying to make a living and give us the best lives. I think that’s what makes us afraid because our parents, we don’t want anything to happen to them,” said Erik Martinez, a student.
Some students say they have personally seen ICE agents in action in their neighborhoods and felt compelled to demonstrate, hoping that together they will have a stronger voice.
