MLK Day of Youth Service with Seeds of Caring
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Families in central Indiana on Monday honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by giving back.
Many turned the federal holiday into a day on, not a day off, to take part in service projects or community cel
ebrations.
At the Madam Walker Legacy Center, children from age 2 to 12 learned that even small hands make a big difference. “I like decorating stuff a lot. I love drawing and painting and decorating different things.” said participant Zeke Mislan.
“We made badges and got books and then made thankful cards for what we’re thankful for,” said participant Asha Brackett.
Seeds of Caring hosted its third annual MLK Day of Youth Service, a hands-on volunteer event designed to introduce kids to community service through age-appropriate projects. More than 300 children and their caregivers took part creating care kits, writing kindness notes, and assembling donations for local nonprofits.Sarah Diaz, Indianapolis site director at Seeds of Caring, said, “We really believe in the power of kids using their voice and helping to make change in our communities, so we have an opportunity for kids to write a letter to local leaders, state leaders to convey what matters to them.”
The event partnered with the Madam Walker Legacy Center’s 44th annual MLK Day of Service. Each service station focused on King’s message of service, social action, and empowerment for the next generation. For 6-year-old Asha, making mirrors was one of her favorite activities of the day. She likes that kids her age can be the change they want to see. “When I look in the mirror, it feels like it all begins with the simple things and it just keeps going and going until the next person has a chance to look through the mirror and see that it begins with them.”
Mislan says he likes coming back every year for the MLK activities. “I like how they change what you do for the same event every year so that you can get a new experience in every time.”
Items made at the event will be distributed to organizations in the central Indiana community.
