A man found hiding in bushes near the site of several small fires near Bonita was arrested Sunday, sheriff’s officials said. Deputies and firefighters responded to reports of fires burning off Quarry Road, below state routes 125 and 54, about 11 a.m., sheriff’s officials said. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fires, which burned at least a quarter acre of vegetation, officials said. Sheriff’s detectives from the bomb/arson unit documented six separate small fires, the agency reported. With help from witnesses and a sheriff’s helicopter overhead, deputies found a man hiding in nearby bushes. He was on probation and had “an extensive criminal history,” officials said. A search turned up drug paraphernalia, a torch lighter, an expandable baton, credit cards, identification cards and other items containing personal information that did not belong to the suspect, sheriff’s officials said.
