Local news will take a backseat to the new governor of New Jersey this week [L.A. PARKER COLUMN]
Jan 17, 2026
A message to Trenton residents considering the launch of campaigns for mayor or city council— Gov.Elect Mikie Sherrill is Queen Bee of all news cycles for the next week.
Sherrill and Lt. Gov.Elect Dr. Dale Caldwell have high profile events scheduled until their inauguration on Tuesday at the New J
ersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) in Newark. Add another day for hoopla connected to their first day on the job, and anytime after Friday seems like a good time for campaign launches.
A personal opinion supports mayoral candidates putting on hold announcements until after two-term incumbent Mayor Reed Gusciora declares his campaign.
While the Sherrill-Caldwell Inaugural Ball lists as a hard invitation to secure, and celebrations for Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. attracts crowds, one ticket lists as most coveted. Trenton Central High School visits Thrive Charter School for a boys basketball game on Monday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.
Going to need a bigger gym although this showdown pales in comparison to past tilts when Trenton High and McCorriston High (aka Trenton Catholic Academy) attracted overflow crowds at Mercer County Community College. There’s still a couple of guys around who scalped tickets for those contests.
Trenton (9-3) have won five straight while Thrive Charter (10-1) visited Roselle Catholic on Saturday as winners of nine straight following an early-season loss to Linden.
