Two of the biggest question marks around the Colorado Rapids’ offseason roster build have been answered. Those are winger Calvin Harris and midfielder Oliver Larraz, who became free agents at the conclusion of last season. The door was open for either to return to Commerce City, but both signed de als elsewhere on Thursday. Both their positions are arguably the deepest and most competitive on the Rapids’ roster. Larraz joined the Vancouver Whitecaps on an 18-month agreement with a club option for the 2027-28 season. Vancouver lost to Inter Miami in the MLS Cup Final in December. Larraz is joining a strong midfield that includes German legend Thomas Müller, Sebastian Berhalter and Ryan Gauld, but his strength as a distributor and calm force could get him on the field. The 24-year old Denver native came up through the Rapids academy system before signing with Rapids 2 in 2023. He shined that year with eight goals and eight assists in an MLS NEXT Pro Best-XI campaign. In 2024, injuries elsewhere paved the way for consistent minutes for Larraz, who played well enough to not be taken off the starting lineup most weeks. He finishes his Rapids first-team career with one regular-season goal and four assists. He scored the team’s lone playoff goal in 2024, a rocket from distance at home against eventual champion L.A. Galaxy. He scored another beauty of a goal in the Leagues Cup third-place match in 2024, which the Rapids won in penalties. SKC, a rival of Colorado, finished dead last in the Western Conference last year with a 7-20-7 record. Two of those wins were against Colorado. Harris is a speedy and versatile winger who joined the Rapids from FC Cincinnati in 2023 and started in about half the games he played. His Colorado tenure yielded 10 goals and six assists across three seasons, including career bests of five goals and three assists in 2025. In waiting for the Rapids are new signings Dante Sealy and Hamzat Ojediran, who play the same positions as Harris and Larraz, respectively. Sealy is an inverted winger, though, meaning he plays on the right like Harris did, but is left-footed unlike Harris. That fits new head coach Matt Wells’ immediate needs more, not to mention Sealy scored a career-high nine goals last season on CF Montréal’s wing. Ojediran is a bit more unproven but has experience as a bruising defensive midfielder at RC Lens, a top-flight French club. Though he plays in the same spot Larraz did for the Rapids, their styles of play couldn’t contrast more — Larraz was more involved offensively in building attacks while Ojediran’s sole responsibility will be to win the ball back in the midfield and control the area defensively. That was an area of need last season, especially as Josh Atencio missed significant time with an MCL strain. Want more sports news?
