Tommies hockey: Men blast Bemidji, women fall to Wisconsin

It was a tale of some good, some bad for the St. Thomas hockey teams on Friday. The No. 19 Tommies men had little difficulty vs. Bemidji State a few hours after the women fell hard to Wisconsin at the Lee Penny Anderson Arena.
No. 17 Tommies men thump Beavers
A two-goal first period put the St. Tho
mas men on the route to a 5-1 defeat of Bemidji State in Friday’s nightcap in St. Paul.
Lucas Wahlin opened the Tommies account with a short-handed goal — the 50th of his career — at 17:05 of the first period, followed up by Jake Braccini’s power-play score at 1:16 as the hosts took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Beavers cut that advantage in half at 14:01 of the second, but Dylan Godbout regained St. Thomas’ two-goal lead at 5:41 to put the Tommies up 3-1 entering the third.
It remained firmly in control of the host team from there at Lucas Van Vliet and Ryan O’Neill each scored in the concluding stanza to give St. Thomas the four-goal victory.
Tommies goaltender Carsen Musser made 14 saves to earn the win.
The victory improved St. Thomas to 13-7-3 overall and 10-3-2 in CCHA play. The Tommies are currently nestled in second place in the conference behind Augustana (15-6-3 overall, 9-4-3 CCHA). The Vikings defeated Ferris State 4-0 on Friday.
St. Thomas and Bemidji State go at it against at 7 p.m. Saturday. The game will be televised on CCHA TV.
No. 1 Badgers women rout Tommies
The St. Thomas women took one on the chin against the No. 1 squad in the land with a 5-1 loss to Wisconsin.
Chloe Boreen, assisted by Cara Sajevic and Keara Parker, scored the Tommies’ lone goal of the game at 10:28 of the second period.
Unfortunately for the hosts, Wisconsin preceded Boreen’s goal with two scores in the first period and three more in the third to win by four goals.
Tommies goalkeeper Julia Minotti had a busy day in net, making 40 saves. St. Thomas put 14 shorts on Badgers netminder Ava McNaughton.
With the loss, the Tommies fell to 10-13-0 overall on the season, 5-12-0 in WCHA play. Wisconsin continues to lead the conference with a 20-1-2 overall record, 14-1-2 in the circuit.
The two teams play again at 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Paul.
