High Pie shop moves out of Oceanside’s ‘Top Gun’ house
Jan 16, 2026
The High Pie shop in Oceanside’s “Top Gun” house has sold its last pastry and a new activity is coming to the historic location, according to the hotel that operates the property.
“Mission Pacific Beach Resort is committed to preserving this iconic space for years to come,” hotel accounts
supervisor Katie Cunningham said Wednesday. “While we’re not ready to announce details, new experiences are coming in 2026 and we look forward to sharing more soon.”
Meanwhile, the fruit-filled individual confections can still be purchased in the hotel lobby’s High/Low shop, according to the business’s website.
“We have loved being your neighborhood sweets shop inside the iconic Graves house since 2022,” the website states. “We are excited for what this new chapter will hold for our little handmade pies and look forward to sharing more with you soon!”
The baby-blue Victorian cottage, built in 1887, also is called the Graves house for the name of its original owner. It perhaps is best known for its brief role in the 1986 blockbuster “Top Gun” movie, as the place where actor Tom Cruise rode up on a motorcycle to meet his onscreen girlfriend played by Kelly McGillis.
The old building was the last of several small homes that occupied the hotel property when the city bought it in the 1980s. The others were all destroyed.
As a condition of the block’s redevelopment, the hotel was required to keep and restore the Graves house in the spot selected on Pacific Street overlooking the Oceanside Municipal Pier.
The Mission Pacific was built by S.D. Malkin Properties as part of a nine-block downtown redevelopment master plan approved by the Oceanside City Council in April 2000.
On Wednesday, the City Council approved plans for two more buildings, one eight stories tall and the other seven stories, that will occupy the final blocks in that master plan. The mixed-use structures with 370 apartments and six live-work condominiums will go up on lots between Mission Avenue and Civic Center Drive, west of the railroad tracks and east of Myers Street.
