A teen driver struck two parents near an elementary school in Gilroy Friday morning, leaving one dead and the other seriously injured, according to officials. The collision happened just after 8 a.m. at the intersection of Charles Lux Drive and Lopez Way, not far from Las Animas Elementary School , police said. The parents were walking in a crosswalk when they were hit, officials said. The father died at the scene. The mother was flown to a hospital in serious condition. The victims’ identities weren’t immediately known. In a letter to the Las Animas school community, Principal Shannon Rafat said the victims are Las Animas parents. One of their children is a student at Las Animas. Another is a student at nearby Rod Kelley Elementary School. Rafat said the parents were hit following school drop-off. “I am devastated for this family and our students, the entire Las Animas community and the driver of the vehicle,” Rafat wrote. “Please hold everyone involved, and our community, in your hearts.” Police said the driver was detained and cooperating with the investigation.
