Oakland just turned on 18 brand-new speed cameras throughout the city to try to slow down drivers. For now, however, there is a 60-day grace period before the city starts mailing out speeding tickets. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee is scheduled to provide further details about the new program durin g a news conference on Friday morning. The 18 locations that were selected have seen a disproportionate number of serious and fatal conditions and/or see several thousand vehicles travel at least 11 mph over the speed limit every day.
