(KRON) -- If you ever drive by North Main Street in Walnut Creek, you've probably spotted the Chick-fil-A adjacent to the 24 Hour Fitness. Since opening in 2012, that location seems to almost always have long lines, especially for its drive-thru. Perhaps to mitigate the traffic and chicken sandwich cravings of the local community, another Chick-fil-A is opening in Walnut Creek -- whether or not residents were on board. This restaurant will be at 2290 Oak Grove Road, according to a Chick-fil-A press release. Its grand opening will be on Thursday, Jan. 22. Hours will be 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day -- except Sunday. This Chick-fil-A will not have a drive-thru and is only serving dine-in and takeout orders. What is a ‘trad son’ and why does this Bay Area city have a lot of them? The arrival of this 5,363-square-foot Chick-fil-A, however, didn't come without controversy. Dating back to early 2024, when the project was being discussed by the city council, a number of residents expressed their opposition to the Chick-fil-A opening. The biggest complaint from residents, according to the city, is the traffic Chick-fil-A will generate in an already busy area. Other nearby businesses are Safeway, Whole Foods, Crunch Fitness and Petco. De La Salle, Carondelet and Ygnacio Valley high schools are also within walking distance. Despite some residents' pushback, the project moved forward. A city spokesperson admitted to KRON4, "there were some hurdles" in the process. The city council approved the project in May of 2024 -- after getting the green light from the Design Review Commission and Planning Commission. There is a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday morning to celebrate Chick-fil-A's upcoming opening, Mayor Kevin Wilk and a city spokesperson tell KRON4. The event is invite-only and not open to the public. On the grand opening day, guests who dress in cow print can receive one free entrée or kids’ meal. Chick-fil-A said "guests have a chance to get a free meal on opening day" but did not provide further details. According to a press release, she met her husband while working at Chick-fil-A during her days at the University of Oklahoma. “From my early days as a Team Member to now opening a restaurant in my home state, this journey has been incredibly rewarding,” Thornton said in a release. “I’m thrilled to serve the Walnut Creek community and build a space where hospitality and heart come first.”  ...read more read less
