Family members are outraged and demand answers after Philadelphia students were forced to sit on the floor of a school bus with limited seating. Novelette Phillips told NBC10 she is horrified that her grandchildren and other students have been riding on a school bus with only a few seats, possib ly since Monday. “My grandson FaceTimed me yesterday while he was sitting on the bus, and I noticed he was sitting on the floor,” said Phillips. Phillips took a video while she was picking up her young ones from the bus stop on Wednesday. In the video, you can see students sitting and lying on the floor of a wheelchair accesible bus. “I’m upset. This is a very unsafe situation. It’s reckless, negligent, kids should not be sitting on the floor traveling on the bus,” Phillips said. Phillips added that she went to the bus driver to see what was going on: “Why don’t the kids have seats. He explained his bus was being repaired, and this is the bus they gave him, and there were no seats.” The children in the video are apparently headed to Discovery Charter School. The school issued a statement saying they are outraged by how the students were reportedly treated. The statement read in part: “The leadership of JYK Discovery Charter School is outraged by the description of how students were reportedly treated. If accurate, that conduct is unacceptable. The safety and dignity of our students is paramount, and no child should ever be placed in that position. That said, JYK Discovery Charter School does not control or operate student transportation. Transportation for our students is provided through the School District of Philadelphia, which bears legal responsibility for transportation services. Any inquiries regarding the circumstances of the reported bus incident must be directed to the School District of Philadelphia. School leadership will not be providing an interview or additional comment on this matter.” The School District of Philadelphia released a statement regarding this incident: “We are aware of the allegations. The Transportation Department is conducting an investigation into this matter and taking corrective action with Durham School Bus Services.” NBC10 reached out to the bus company involved, Durham School Bus Services, and they provided the following statement: “We can confirm that one of our drivers operated a vehicle beyond its recommended capacity. While this vehicle is designed to accommodate up to six passengers, the driver allowed an additional three passengers on board, which was not permitted under our guidelines.  The driver in question was immediately removed from service, and we are completing a thorough investigation. We take this matter and the safety of the students we transport very seriously and are reinforcing our protocols to help ensure this does not happen again.“ Phillips shares that she wants answers about how this was allowed to happen and what’s being done to ensure it doesn’t happen again. “I would have preferred. You just canceled the route, and we come pick up our kids instead of you driving our kids across the city, sitting on the floor of a school bus,” said Phillips. “Totally unacceptable, negligent, and very reckless.” ...read more read less
