Doug McConnell, the longtime host of “OpenRoad with Doug McConnell and Friends,” passed away Tuesday, leaving behind a legacy of curiosity, stewardship, and connection to the natural wonders of Northern California.
For decades, McConnell brought the Bay Area’s outdoors into his viewers’ h
omes. Many remember him from Bay Area Backroads where for 23 years he took viewers through scenic landscapes, small towns, and winding waterways that make the Bay Area so unique.
For the last 11 years he brought his trademark enthusiasm to NBC Bay Area with “Open Road with Doug McConnell and Friends.” His commitment to education and outreach inspired generations to venture outside, explore new trails, and cultivate a sense of wonder about the natural world.
McConnell’s work extended beyond the screen. He was a passionate advocate for conservation, tirelessly promoting the protection and enjoyment of public lands. His work will continue to inspire people to explore, appreciate, and safeguard the wonders of the Bay Area and beyond.
In fact, the 12th season of OpenRoad kicks off this Saturday at 4:30 p.m., with his long-time travel partners carrying on his legacy.
