Local College Notebook: Rider women’s basketball’s Alena Cofield named MAAC Rookie of the Week

It was quite a week for Rider freshman Alena Cofield as her performance earned her the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honor.
The former Neshaminy star hit a 3-pointer with just over a minute to go to give the Broncs a win over Siena. The win snapped a seven-game losing skid.

ofield finished the game with a career-high 18 points and the next game set a new career mark in assists with five and she added 14 points in the game against Marist.
Cofield is averaging 8.1 points and 4.3 rebounds for the season.
Rider hosts Sacred Heart on Saturday.
Rychkov Topples Another Track Record
Maxim Rychkov (Robbinsville) took down another track record at The College of New Jersey in the Lions Indoor Invitational.
He was named the NJAC Track Athlete of the Week.
Rychkov’s new record came in the 400m, where he won the race with a rapid time of 47.95. a tie which is a second better than the previous mark and the 6th best mark in Division III and 23rd in all of the NCAA Divisions.
Pitts Earns Defensive Player of the Week
Terrell Pitts (St. Thomas Aquinas/Trenton resident) was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week in the Eastern Division.
The East Stroudsburg sophomore faced the two top teams in the division and Pitts’ lockdown defense helped the Warriors go 2-0 against Millersville and Shepherd last week.
Faced with guarding some of the conference’s top scorers, his defensive skills kept them well below their season average.
Pitts’ pressure earned him credit for two steals while only committing two personal fouls.
McFadden Named Defensive Player of the Week
Brooke McFadden (Conwell-Egan) was named the NJAC women’s basketball Defensive Player of the Week in leading The College of New Jersey to a pair of wins.
The sophomore controlled the backboard averaging 14.5 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals while anchoring the Lions’ interior defense.
She posted nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the one-point victory over Rowan before delivering a 20-rebound performance against Rutgers-Newark.
McFadden became the first TCNJ player to eclipse 20 boards in a game since 2019 and now ranks third in the NJAC in rebounding average at 8.6 per game.
She added 12.5 points per game while shooting 57 percent from 3-point range during the week.
McFadden currently leads the NJAC in conference-only rebounding (11.0 rpg), and is second in blocks (1.7 bpg).
Jeffers-Viera Named Rookie of the Week
Malachi Jeffers-Viera (WW-P North) was named the NJAC Rookie of the Week in Men’s Basketball for the second time this season.
The Kean freshman averaged 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds while shooting 58 percent from the field in Kean’s two conference wins.
Jeffers-Viera posted a stellar 22-point, five-rebound effort in a 73-62 victory over William Paterson. He followed with eight points and five rebounds in a 77-64 win against Rutgers- Camden.
Jeffers-Viera added three assists, two steals and one block for the week as the Cougars improved to 2-0 in conference play. He currently ranks third in the NJAC in conference-only free throw percentage (88.9%) and seventh in conference-only blocks (1.3 bpg). He also adds 13.1 points and 1.4 steals per game.
Mahana Named Patriot Diver of the Week
Zein Mahana (Princeton) swept the diving events to help Boston University earn wins over Colgate and Fairfield in a tri-meet.
The junior earned a NCAA zone cut in the three-meter board with a season-best score of 345.20 before adding a win in the one meter (286.65).
Goss Named NJAC Player of the Week
Kabrien Goss (Roman Catholic/Trenton resident) was named the NJAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after a stellar two-game stretch that propelled Montclair State to a 12-0 start.
The sophomore guard averaged 24.0 points and 6.0 assists per game while shooting an elite 56% from the field, 55% from 3-point range, and 88% from the free-throw line.
Goss created scoring opportunities throughout the week with his efficient shooting and playmaking, highlighted by a career-high 28 points along with six assists, three rebounds, and two steals with zero turnovers in a 92-87 victory over Saint Joseph (CT) on New Year’s Eve.
He opened the 2026 calendar year with 20 points along with six assists, three boards, and a steal in a 100-89 win over Albertus Magnus.
Goss leads the NJAC in both assists (6.0 apg) and 3-point percentage (45.5%), is third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.0), fourth in made threes (2.5/game), and adds 13.7 points per outing.
Gacia-Beltran Named Track Athlete of the Week
Lucia Garcia-Beltran (Hopewell Valley) earned NJAC Track Athlete of the Week honors after setting a new program record in the 60 meters at the Lions Indoor Invitational.
The College of New Jersey senior sprinter clocked a time of 7.63 seconds, which ranks fifth in NCAA Division III.

It was Delfosse’s second double-double of the season. …Reese Zemitis (Neshaminy) had 11 points in Bucknell’s three-point loss to Loyola. …Franki Gomez (Hopewell Valley) had 10 points for Rochester in a game with No. 9 Emory. …Kayla McCrea (Allentown) had seven points and five rebounds for Franklin Mashall in a game with RV McDaniel. …Brianna McFadden (Conwell-Egan) had nine points in Gwynedd Mercy’s game with Immaculata.
