Public comments on the Army’s plan to change operations at Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site, northwest of Trinidad, are due Tuesday. The proposed plan would allow weapons such as artillery shells and rockets that would land in designated impact sites, according to an earlier Gazette story. Servi ce members who train on the expansive site currently can’t fire anything larger than a .50-caliber machine gun at the training site. The Army is also mulling new buildings on the site and an expanded number of training days up to 313 days a year, an increase from the 212 days currently allowed. Fort Carson officials have said the changes would allow them to use the site to train in more diverse ways. Some neighbors and others have concerns that the additional training could hurt the thousands of historical and archaeological sites on the property. The Army is asking for public comment by Tuesday on its proposal to ensure full consideration. Comments can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed to PCMS NEPA ℅ Tetra Tech 7222 Commerce Center Drive Suite 150 Colorado Springs CO 80919. Comments post-marked by Tuesday will receive full consideration. ...read more read less
