RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A fifth pedestrian has been hit and killed in Richmond in less than a month. It happened just two days after Mayor Danny Avula announced immediate actions the city is taking to combat more happening. The most recent was on Saturday, Jan. 10, at around 7:40 p.m. at th e intersection of Maury and 19th Streets. Police have not released information on the identity of the woman who was killed. Police said the driver stayed on the scene, and no charges have been filed.   “In general, pedestrian deaths have been a real issue in the past decade or so," said executive director of DRIVE SMART Virginia Kristin Pettway. "They’ve been rising.”  In fact, over the past three years, pedestrian deaths statewide have stayed pretty stagnant with no improvement.   DRIVE SMART, a non-profit focused on road safety awareness, has partnered with the city’s Vision Zero for years, a global initiative aimed to end all traffic deaths.  Pettway said there’s a few reasons we're seeing the numbers we are for pedestrian deaths. One being bigger cars with more blind spots, and more distractions than ever. Noise cancelling headphones and pedestrians and drivers are distracted by cellphones.  But she said no one group is more responsible than the other.   “It’s important that this doesn’t become a blame game, right? It is about taking responsibility," she said. "If you’re using the road in any way, if you’re a pedestrian, if you’re a bicyclist, if you’re a driver, you have responsibility. Let’s have, like, a more community-minded spirit when we’re using the roads.”   The city will be adding safety cameras, overseeing various street safety improvements, creating the Richmond Department of Transportation and creating a pedestrian safety task force.  ...read more read less
