A 15-year-old boy is in custody after police said he shot his father inside their Plano home Monday morning, turning what officers described as a family disturbance into a criminal case.
Plano Police received a call of a shooting at about 8:25 a.m. on Monday in the 4500 block of Sandy Water Lane
in northwest Plano, according to a statement from the Plano Police Department.
Plano Police said officers were called to the home by the victim himself.
“The caller, who was also the victim, stated that his son had shot him,” said Jerry Minton, public information officer for the Plano Police.
Officers said the father was hospitalized with injuries not considered life threatening.
Police said the teen was still inside the home when officers arrived and was taken into custody without incident.
“Almost immediately after the officers arrived, he was detained and taken into custody,” Minton said.
Police said the teen would be transported to the Collin County Juvenile Detention Center on Monday afternoon, where he is expected to face a judge.
It remains unclear who owned the gun or how the minor gained access to it. Police confirmed the weapon was recovered.
“This is a family issue,” Minton said. “Don’t know the motive behind it. Just that this is a father and son issue where the son shot the father.”
Neighbors said they were shocked by the violence and had not noticed anything unusual before police arrived.
“I just saw a bunch of police vehicles outside, in the street,” Karthik Mahadevan, who lives a few houses away, said.
Mahadevan said the family appeared quiet.
“We go for walks and might see them on the street sometimes and say hi, but we don’t know them that well,” Mahadevan said. “It’s a little shocking and a little sad, really.”
Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.
The investigation is ongoing.
