Last Tuesday, one of the 10 richest people in the world said he's "perfectly fine" with a proposed 5% wealth tax in California. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, said he has not "not even thought about it once", even though he himself would be
on the hook for $8 billion! The next day, it was announced that Oregon's 2025 transportation funding package is headed for repeal because the Legislature could not raise taxes to pay for it. This is in spite of Democratic supermajorities in both houses. At a time of historic wealth inequality, when the top 0.1% own 5 times more wealth than the bottom 50%, this juxtaposition is glaringly galling. If a gazillionaire is OK with taxes, those among us who are slightly less rich than him have no excuse. Some lucky few of us will soon have a say in the Democratic establishment's spinelessness. In May, voters in OR House District 27 (Beaverton, West Slope, and Cedar Hills) can vote for Dr Tammy Carpenter in the Democratic primary. She is the only candidate who has clearly called for taxing the rich, no ifs, ands, or buts. And even if you don't live in HD27, Dr Tammy deserves your support, because all of us will have to drive on roads poorly maintained by ODOT's poverty budget, regardless of what district we live in.
