Quiet and milder into Tuesday as active weather looms
Jan 12, 2026
It was definitely a frosty start to Monday across Central and Eastern Kentucky with temperatures dipping down into the upper teens and low 20s to begin the day on Monday so the heavy coats came in handy early. With high pressure off to our south, a steady southwest wind combined with the sunsh
ine made for a very pleasant mid-January day as afternoon highs managed to recover all the way into the mid to upper 40s. This was a significant jump compared to Sunday when readings struggled to get above the freezing mark.
The good news into Tuesday is the upward trend of temperatures will continue as high pressure moves off to our southeast. With more sunshine in place and a southwest wind picking up even more, afternoon highs should surge all the way back into the low to mid-50s, which is over 10 degrees above average for this time of the year. It will be a breezy day with winds 10 to 15 miles per hour and gusts occasionally over 30 mph but that wind will be the driving force being another unseasonably mild day. Enjoy it as changes are on tap for the mid-week and beyond.
A clipper system looks to dive in from the northwest on Wednesday bringing scattered rain showers back to the Bluegrass so you’ll need the rain gear from time to time during the day. Afternoon highs should reach the low 40s before the front moves through late in the day and allows colder air to return to the commonwealth. It appears there will be enough moisture hanging back in the cold air to transition over to snow showers Wednesday night, which may lead to some light accumulations by Thursday morning. While the amounts look to be fairly low, the timing once again could very well create some negative impacts for the Thursday morning commute so that’s something we’ll monitor closely over the next few days. It will definitely feel like January on Thursday with a mix of clouds and sunshine, a few leftover snow showers and afternoon highs only in the mid to upper 20s. A brisk northwest wind could also knock wind chills well down into the teens.
Look for a quiet and cold finish to the week on Friday as yet another clipper system dives southeast toward the Ohio Valley. Expect a slight bump in temperatures with highs into the mid-30s thanks to the southwest flow ahead of the approaching front. At this point it looks cold enough for everything to fall in the frozen form so scattered snow showers will increase late in the day as the system moves in. It may end up being a snowy start to the weekend with additional snow shower chances on Saturday, which would be light accumulations in play given the cold air in place. This system will bring a reinforcing shot of colder air in as well so temperatures may struggle to reach the freezing mark on Saturday before tumbling even more to close out the weekend. Highs look to camp out in the mid-20s on Sunday after early morning temperatures kick the day off in the low teens! The “clipper train” may roll along into the King holiday next Monday with the data hinting at another round of snow showers and cold into the early part of next week so get set for a colder and more active weather pattern as we go deeper into January.
