Hughes County Sheriff Patrick Callahan will not seek re-election in 2026. In a statement released today (Jan. 12, 2026), Callahan said he’s been making plans for the next chapter of his life and looks forward to returning to the private sector once his current duties and commitments are complete a t the end of 2026. Callahan began his journey in law enforcement in 1990, followed by a successful period as a local business owner and active community member. Callahan said he returned to lead the office through a period of significant transition, addressing the complex challenges the jail faced following the COVID-19 pandemic as well as resolving critical financial issues within the department. He believes that job is done. When Callahan took office in 2021, he said jail revenues were $1.5 million, and by 2025, the Hughes County Jail revenues reached $4.1 million. He said this provides a stable, sustainable foundation for taxpayers and ensures the Sheriff’s Office and Jail are prepared for the challenges ahead. Callahan said being entrusted by the citizens to lead the county law enforcement agency is an honor he’s taken seriously every single day and he thanks the residents of Hughes County for their trust, partnership and commitment to a safer community. Callahan said the brave men and women working for the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office and Jail represent the finest qualities of law enforcement, and it’s been his “highest professional honor to serve alongside them. As I prepare to return to my roots in the local business community, I do so knowing the future of the Hughes County Sheriff’s Office is bright.” ...read more read less
