Two days after he was sworn in as Bucks County’s newly elected sheriff, Danny Ceisler said he intends in the coming days to end the county’s participation in the controversial U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) 287g program. A moratorium on the training and deputization of county dep uties to act as federal agents in immigration enforcement was to go into place, said Ceisler, adding the focus now would be on the traditional role of serving warrants and dealing with civil matters. “I’m going to place an immediate moratorium on any activity in accordance with the 287g agreement,” said Ceisler.  “From there, we’re going to figure out how we can responsibly and prudently withdraw from the agreement while maintaining public safety.” The program is one Ceisler had campaigned on halting, though a county judge late last year ruled the agreement made by previous sheriff Fred Harran was legal. Harran last April signed an agreement to train county deputies to use federal database and arrest those with criminal warrants. The action was opposed by the county commissioners, the ACLU of Pennsylvania and other groups who said it could lead to racial profiling. Ceisler also has said in the past his program opposition is about community safety. Said he: “I have opposed this partnership from the beginning because when you scare immigrant communities from being able to report crime it makes all of us less safe.” Bucks County Judge Jeffrey G. Trauger last fall ruled the sheriff’s office can work with ICE, a ruling that upheld Harran’s decision to enter into the ICE agreement without the approval of the county commissioners.
