NELSON COUNTY, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — Kentucky State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday afternoon in Nelson County and left an 80-year-old man dead. According to Kentucky State Police, their Critical Incident Response Team was called in to investigate the shooting, which happened around 1:17 p.m. Investigators say the situation began at the Nelson County Humane Society, where an employee called 911 after a man became disorderly and allegedly threatened staff with a firearm. Authorities identified that man as Norman Perkins, 80, of New Haven. Police say Perkins left the area before deputies arrived. Nelson County sheriff’s deputies later located him on Bloomfield Road and attempted a traffic stop. Investigators say Perkins initially refused to pull over before eventually stopping in the parking lot of a business along Bloomfield Road. According to state police, deputies say Perkins pointed a firearm at them during the encounter. Both deputies fired their weapons, striking Perkins. Life-saving measures were attempted at the scene, but Perkins later died from his injuries. Authorities say no officers were injured during the incident. Kentucky State Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and additional details will be released as they become available.
