Meritage in downtown St. Paul will be running a pop-up serving steak, mussels and not much else during the three remaining Wednesdays in January. Called Steak Frites, the restaurant will serve that classic French dish along with moules frites (mussels and fries). And yes, that’s the whole menu — and the whole point. In a news release, chef Russell Klein said the idea is to “do just a couple of things well, make it generous, and keep it affordable.” To that end, for $32, guests will receive a prix-fixe menu that includes the following: Warm bread and salted butter, a house salad served family style (with an option to upgrade to Meritage’s fantastic French onion soup), choice of steak or mussels and bottomless fries. Yes, you read that right, as many of the best fries in the Twin Cities as you can eat. In addition, there will be seasonal vegetables and a short dessert menu available to add to the meal a la carte. A limited menu of beer, wine and cocktails will be $11 apiece. “Steak frites and moules frites are two of the most iconic dishes in French cooking,” Klein said in the release. “It’s straightforward, filling, and generous by nature. This pop-up is about leaning into that — a great plate of food, plenty to eat, and a price that is easy to digest.” The concept will be coming soon as a stand-alone restaurant. Klein says the team is still looking for a location.
