Man dead after crash on I-69 In Huntington County INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A 77-year-old Bluffton man died early Wednesday after the SUV he was in went airborne and flipped several times before landing in a ditch along I-69 in Huntington County. Richard Elston was driving eastbound on County R oad 200 North around 12:45 a.m. when he reached a dead end facing I-69 and “failed to realize the road had ended,” the Huntington County Sheriff’s Office said in a release. The initial investigation found that Elston’s SUV went through the grass and crashed through an INDOT construction fence before going airborne. The SUV hit the edge of a southbound lane of I-69 and went airborne again, striking a top barrier cable, which caused the vehicle to “roll front to rear several times” before landing on its roof in the northbound ditch, the sheriff’s office says. Emergency crews found Elston, who was not wearing a seatbelt, partially pinned under the SUV. He suffered multiple blunt force traumatic injuries and died at the scene. No one else was in the vehicle. “It is believed that Mr. Elston may have thought he was on County Road 300 North, which has anoverpass, and is a road he has travelled on in the past,” the sheriff’s office said. Alcohol is not considered to be a factor in the crash; however, investigators believe speed may have played a role. Huntington County, with 36,900 residents, is in northern Indiana, southeast of Fort Wayne. ...read more read less
