Some Jan. 6 defendants plan to hold a march in Washington, D.C., on the fifth anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Capitol. The organizers include former Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was pardoned by President Donald Trump. Tarrio says justice has not been served for Ashli Babbitt, who was shot and killed by a U.S. Capitol police officer inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. “Join us as we march for Ashli on January 6th. We also march in memory of those who passed away. 5 years ago a beautiful life was taken from us. A veteran and a patriot. So I ask those that are able to attend please do so,” he wrote on X. A flyer he posted on X says the march will be held Tuesday, beginning at the Ellipse just before noon. He said it will honor all the lives lost that day. Former special counsel says case against Trump was strong The anniversary of Jan. 6 comes just days after former special counsel Jack Smith defended the indictment of Trump. In a recorded deposition released New Year’s Eve, Smith said the criminal case against Trump was very strong and never political. The criminal case, which was filed against Trump for allegedly attempting to overturn the 2020 election, was dismissed after Trump was re-elected in 2024. Last month, Smith, the man in charge of that investigation, defended his case in a deposition before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee. “One of the strengths of our case and why we felt we had such strong proof is our witnesses were not gonna be political enemies of the president; they were going to be political allies,” Smith said. “We had numerous witnesses who would say, ‘I voted for President Trump.'” Donald Trump Jan 1 Capitol riot ‘does not happen' without Trump, Jack Smith told Congress Capitol Riot Jan 5 This Jan. 6 plaque was made to honor law enforcement. It's nowhere to be found at the Capitol Smith told the committee the attack at the Capitol wouldn’t have happened without Trump. “The evidence here made clear that President Trump was by a large measure the most culpable and most responsible person in this conspiracy. These crimes were committed for his benefit. The attack that happened at the Capitol, part of this case, does not happen without him,” Smith said. More than 100 officers were injured during the 2021 attack on the Capitol. D.C. police inspector Robert Glover told NBC Washington in July 2022 that the violence was so fierce he thought some officers would be justified in using deadly force. “I could see the fear in a lot of the officers’ eyes,” Glover said. Plaque honoring police who defended Capitol hasn’t been installed A plaque honoring the police officers who defended the Capitol on Jan. 6 still has not been installed on the west front of the Capitol. It was authorized by Congress in 2022 and is now the subject of a lawsuit in federal court. The lawsuit was filed by two officers who hope to force the architect of the Capitol to finally display it for all to see, but the U.S. Department of Justice, which is defending the architect, wants the case dismissed. For now, the location of that plaque is unknown. ...read more read less
