San Diego kicked off the new year with an entire month’s worth of rain in just one day. More than two inches fell at the airport between midnight and early yesterday afternoon, which is actually more than the city typically gets during all of January. Based on records going back to 1939, it’s li kely to rank as one of the top fifteen rainiest days the city has ever seen. The West Coast will stay in an unsettled pattern, with a series of mostly weaker storm systems sliding through. That means our area will keep seeing periodic chances for rain through the weekend and into the early part of next week. Low to mid-level clouds are covering most of the county this morning with the next storm system is expected to arrive this afternoon or evening, followed by a second wave on Sunday. Rainfall totals and rates should be much lower than what we saw with the last storm. From Saturday through Sunday night, coastal and valley areas are looking at roughly a quarter to a half inch of rain, the mountains could pick up between half an inch and an inch and a half, and the deserts will likely see only about a tenth of an inch. Higher totals are expected across the northern part of the county, with lighter amounts farther south. We have continued rain chances Monday and Tuesday, and possibly into the rest of next week. More details on that to come! We also have another full Super Moon this weekend for the fourth consecutive month, which will bring King Tides. We’ll have morning high tides around 7’ each morning, with Saturday, Sunday, and Monday morning seeing the highest tides. Each afternoon will have lower-than-normal low tides.   SATURDAY Coast: mostly cloudy, PM Rain – mid to upper 60s Inland: mostly cloudy, PM Rain -mid to upper 60s Mountains: mostly cloudy, PM Rain – low 50s Deserts: mostly cloudy, chance of rain – upper 60s ...read more read less
