Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson earned his first Western Conference Coach of the Month award, winning it for the month of December. Per the Spurs’ official press release: The NBA today announced that Spurs Head Coach Mitch Johnson was named Western Conference Coach of the Month fo r December. Johnson earns his first career Coach of the Month award after guiding the Spurs to a league-best 11-3 record, including a run to the Emirates NBA Cup Championship Game and a 6-1 road record in December. San Antonio’s slate featured road wins at Orlando and the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as three victories over Oklahoma City, and a year-end win vs. New York. From Dec. 8-25, the Silver and Black recorded an eight-game winning streak, with a different player leading the team in scoring in each of the first seven games. This is the second such instance in NBA history, both by San Antonio. Also during the month, eight different players averaged at least 10.0 points as the Spurs went 5-1 in clutch games. San Antonio averaged 121.4 points per game and held opponents to 115.0, posting a 118.9 offensive rating (fifth in the NBA) and a 112.0 defensive rating (sixth) while leading the league in defensive rebounding percentage (74.3). Johnson is joined by Boston Celtics Head Coach Joe Mazzulla, the Eastern Conference Coach of the Month. Despite many injuries, including Victor Wembanyama only appearing in 46 games before being diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in February, the Spurs went 32-45 with Johnson at the helm, and that record was officially transferred from Pop’s record to his after Pop retired at the end of the season and Johnson was officially named head coach.
