Jan 01, 2026
The Dragonman’s shooting range and the Ellicott Fire Department are asking the public for help in identifying two people believed to have caused a fire on the first day of 2026.
The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office briefly issued an evacuation order north of the Schriever Space Force Base arou
nd 1 p.m. Thursday due to a fire at 1200 Dragonman Drive, according to a social media post from the law enforcement agency.
The Ellicott Fire Department extinguished the fire, and the Sheriff’s Office lifted the order about 20 minutes after deputies told residents to evacuate. The evacuation included the area west of Curtis Road, south of Davis Road, east of Blaney Road and north of Highway 94.
In a separate post, Dragonman’s staff confirmed that the fire started behind the shooting range and was caused by incendiary ammunition, which they said they don’t allow.
The post goes on to say that witnesses saw two shooters fire rounds that sparked a flame on the berm before indicating that they may have caused it. The two packed up and left a short time later. While part of the incident was caught on the shooting range’s surveillance footage, staff members are asking for additional information to narrow down names.
“We are asking if anyone has more information to call us at (719) 683-2200,” the post read.
“The fire department and all of us at Dragonman’s would like to know who these individuals are. This could have been very damaging to us and our neighbors!”
Dragonman’s staff said they may start checking visitors’ rounds to prevent future sparks and fires.
“It sucks this is what it might come down to, but the safety of individuals and our facility are incredibly important (to) us,” they said.
