It is not often you see a Class AA school in South Dakota competing with a Class B school on the basketball court. Even less often will you see the B school take down the AA school in a dominant fashion. The reason you don’t often see the two classes cross is simply because of an uneven playing fi eld. AA schools have larger enrollment, and often a larger talent pool. It is nothing against the smaller classifications, it’s just a numbers game. But every so often, you get a perfect storm like we saw on Monday night where the Class B Lyman Raiders handed the Class AA Mitchell Kernels a 60-52 loss in girls basketball. How did the two teams end up competing you may ask? Both were invited to play in the Hoop City Classic at the Corn Palace, a holiday tournament held at the home of the Kernels and home to the incredibly rare and impressive upset. Lyman did not win this Class B versus Class AA matchup by sheer luck, they controlled the contest leading wire-to-wire. Lyman was led by Jordyn Scott who scored 27 points in the win. It was a physical game between the two, which saw numerous players one foul away from fouling out in the fourth quarter. Mitchell’s Addie Siemsen had a blistering hot night from the floor scoring 25 points, but the Raiders matched the good shooting from Siemsen with good passing from both Jordyn and Mak Scott, along with Brooke Montgomery who all had three assists. Lyman and their head coach Cody Volmer were thrilled with the opportunity to face off with a AA school like Mitchell, but were even more thrilled with the outcome. “When they called and asked if we would take this game, I said I would,” said Volmer. “I didn’t know what Mithcell had, but I knew what we had and I was excited for [that]. So I guess when we had the opportunity, I was going to take [it]”. Lyman stays undefeated with the upset (3-0) while Mitchell falls to 1-3. ...read more read less
