The Eagles will rest several key starters in Week 18, the team confirmed on Wednesday afternoon. While several big names will not play, the Eagles won’t be able to rest everyone. And they will still be trying to win the game to improve their seeding heading into the playoffs. Some starters will rest, some will be limited and some will dress but not play. Earlier in the day, head coach Nick Sirianni declined to provide that update because he hadn’t yet met with his players to deliver the news. But it was obvious that was the way this was trending, especially after a report from Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer said as much. “We have a team meeting coming up,” Sirianni said. “I haven’t communicated that with our players so I’ll always talk to our players, discuss it with them before I discuss it. Nearing in more on a decision but I want to discuss it with those guys before I say anything else.” This decision doesn’t come as a surprise based on what Sirianni said earlier in the week about rest and creating bye weeks. He hinted at this decision on Monday. “If I look back and how beneficial some of the byes that we’ve had have been, that’s part of the reason why you think through it,” Sirianni said on Monday. “It’s a marathon of a season. You give your guys some rest, you get some time to think through some different things, even though you’re preparing for an opponent as you go. Both times that I’ve been here that we’ve been to the Super Bowl, we’ve had that opportunity for a bye, and that’s ’22 and obviously ’24. In ’21, we created ourselves a bye as well. You have the opportunity to do that.” Since the news broke, the line in the game has dropped. The Eagles were initially favored by 7.5 points and that’s down to 3.5, via FanDuel. The Eagles (11-5) enter Week 18 sitting in the 3-seed in the NFC with an opportunity to get the 2-seed with some help. If the Eagles beat the Commanders on Sunday and the Bears lose to the Lions — both games are at 4:25 p.m. — the Eagles would get the second seed in the NFC. Because rosters are limited, the Eagles won’t be able to rest everyone in Week 18, so some starters will still likely have to play. And it’s worth noting that the Commanders are likely going to start 39-year-old Josh Johnson in this game. So there’s a chance that the Eagles’ backups will still be able to beat the Commanders on Sunday. Backup quarterback Tanner McKee is expected to get the start in the regular season finale. “I think that when you see Tanner, he’s really good about knowing where to go with the football, seeing the defense and being able to deliver things accurately,” Sirianni said. “It’s a great room where those guys feed off each other and learn from each other. He’s got Jalen, being able to learn from Jalen, which is a huge deal. Anytime you’re around a really good quarterback, your game goes up too and he’s able to sit in that meeting room with Jalen for hours upon hours a day, just learning from him. That’s a big deal.” ...read more read less
