NWS confirms Linton tornado
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — A tornado touched down in the town of Linton on Sunday night, the National Weather Service confirmed Monday.
The tornado was an EF1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph. It was on the ground for about two minu
tes and traveled for just over 1 mile, cutting right through town.
No serious injuries were reported, but trees, power lines, and buildings were damaged.
“One of a couple of of tornadoes in the Midwest. There was a much longer and stronger one near Decatur, Illinois, that was on the ground, too. A very rare December tornado event,” StormTrack 8 Meteorologist Marcus Bailey said Tuesday on Daybreak.

The Linton tornado was Indiana’s 60th tornado of 2025.
“We should be averaging around 25 tornadoes per year, usually,” Bailey said. “It puts us squarely in the second slot for the most in a year, only behind 2011, where we had 72,” Bailey said.
While a tornado in December might seem strange to some, Bailey says tornadoes can happen at any time of the year.
“There is no month on the calendar in Indiana where we have not had a tornado. There’s even been tornadoes in January. It’s just a good reminder: always be prepared.”
Still, Bailey doesn’t have any severe weather threats in his 7-day forecast. Cold weather will stick around through the weekend, with a chance for snow on New Year’s Eve.
