More than 11,000 PGE customers in San Francisco were left without power on Sunday night, according to the utility. This is the latest of several power-related issues the city has faced over the past week. PGE Outage Center map reported 11,206 households were left in the dark Sunday evening. A sp okesperson for the utility said that at 7:45 p.m., the outage started due to “an overhead equipment failure.” The San Francisco Fire Department confirmed it responded to a transformer fire at 12th and Balboa at that time. Residents in the Richmond District and near Golden Gate Park reported being impacted by this outage; many were particularly frustrated after having recently lost power for around two days during the widespread outage last week. By 10:15 p.m., PGE reported that power had been restored for all impacted customers. This follows another PGE outage in San Francisco that left around 6,000 people in the dark Saturday around the Sunset District, as well as a large power outage that impacted more than 125,000 San Francisco customers at one point on Dec. 20. On December 22, PGE installed seven temporary generators at 24th Avenue and Balboa in Richmond, which had temporarily been providing power to around 6,000 customers following the city-wide outage last week. Neighbors’ complaints escalated over the week about the noise and the smell from those generators. “Its noisy, it’s—some of us can’t even sleep at night,” explained neighbor William Rankin. Rankin was excited to hear that his neighborhood could be back on the power grid as soon as Monday, but he said he would take the timeline PGE promised “with a  grain of salt.” Many of the residents in the Richmond were among those who went without power for the longest period of time in last week’s citywide outage. Joseph Engh, who lives on 24th Avenue, said that in the 55 years his family has had the home, they had never seen power issues of this scale. Engh, who is a senior, said the outages have him worried he could be left without power for an even longer period of time. “I’m a little scared because my eyes aren’t too good either, so I depend on a lot of batteries, so I was at Home Depot, and Costco [I] bought a bunch of batteries,” he said. Approximately four miles away, PGE crews continue working on repairs to the substation at 8th and Mission where a fire took place on December 20. “This was a very serious situation; we know this resulted in some incredible inconvenience for customers, both residential and business, and we pledge to do everything we can to not have this happen again,” said PGE spokesperson Matt Nauman. Customers experiencing power issues are asked to call PGE’s hotline at 1-800-743-5000. ...read more read less
