San Francisco's Outer Sunset neighbors frustrated after early morning sideshow
Dec 28, 2025
Neighbors in San Francisco’s normally quiet Outer Sunset District got an unwelcome early morning awakening this weekend.
The neighborhood erupted with a wild sideshow at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday. There were also fireworks, gunfire and a fire.
“I called the police, and they took a half hour
to get here. And then they fire-bombed a truck over here,” said Dennis Gallagher, a resident.
Gallagher says he’s lived at the intersection of 48th Avenue and Kirkham Street since 1998 and this is the first sideshow he’s seen here.
“I can’t remember anything like this before,” he said.
He estimated there were close to 1,000 people at the sideshow at one point, some of them standing on top of his SUV and other neighbors’ vehicle.
Horns were honking and the sound of smoking tires screeching in the streets filled the air.
Neighbors say there were also fireworks going off in the middle of Kirkham Street and then multiple people intentionally set another neighbor’s U-Haul on fire.
Several neighbors told NBC Bay Area they were not happy with the police response, saying it took a half hour for officers to get there and said they’d like to see improvements.
“When they take that long to get here, there’s something wrong,” said Gallagher.
“Just faster police response. There shouldn’t be sideshows out here, you know in the middle of the morning,” said Phillip Pena Bella, a resident.
District 4 Supervisor Alan Wong says the SFPD stunt driving response unit is investigating.
Wong also met with residents Saturday afternoon, and in a written statement said the sideshows are “dangerous and have no place in our neighborhoods.”
Gallagher suggests adding speed bumps to slow the cars down and prevent the sideshows.
“Because most of them are built very low to the ground, and speed bumps, they won’t handle very well,” said Gallagher.
The city recently doubled fines for sideshows from $500 dollars to $1,000 dollars after approving legislation co-sponsored by Supervisor Wong.
