Snowmobiler injured in large avalanche north of Yosemite National Park

(KRON) — A snowmobiler was seriously injured in an avalanche in the Sierra Nevada north of Yosemite National Park Saturday.

A group of seven snowmobilers caused a large avalanche as they were riding near La
topie Lake in the Bridgeport Winter Recreation Area, according to the Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team. One of the snowmobilers was fully buried in the avalanche.
Witnesses dug the victim out of the snow. California Highway Patrol and medevac helicopters were called to the emergency.
The victim was flown to a Level 2 trauma center, in Reno, Nev. Their condition is not publicly known at this time.

The six remaining snowmobilers did not need rescue and left the area on their vehicles around 12:40 p.m.
Two people were seriously injured in a different avalanche at Mammoth Mountain ski resort in the eastern Sierra Nevada Friday.
“The team would like to remind the public that dangerous avalanche conditions exist throughout the county,” the Mono County Sheriff Search and Rescue Team said.
