HAMILTON — A popular business recorded its first burglary in nearly a century. Eet Gud Bakery employees and owner Tracey Destribats looked and sounded shaken after an intruder broke into the business on the 2100 block of Hamilton Ave. The incident occurred at 4 a.m. Sunday when no employees were p resent. Destribats, who purchased the bakery located across the street from Nottingham High School eight years ago, said the break-in was a first. A long-time employee said she could not recall any criminal activity there for decades. A burglar broke this glass door then gained entry into Eet Gud Bakery in Hamilton early Sunday. (The Trentonian/L.A. Parker) Destribats explained security cameras recorded one vehicle pulled into the parking lot and a passenger exited. The burglar moved to the outside rear portion of the building then returned to the front entrance. “It looked like the person broke the glass door with a hammer then gained entry,” Destribats said. “He walked into the back area and opened drawers, opened the microwave, freezer, and dishwasher, probably thinking that we hid money there. But there was not much money here. We rarely keep any large amounts of cash on the premises.” In fact, Destribats said the cost for repairing the glass door will be more than the thief walked away with. An employee discovered the breach at about 6 a.m. when she entered with a contractor who had been putting down salt to treat the parking lot. Destribats said the man had asked for an early-morning donut. They discovered the broken glass then called Destribats and Hamilton Twp. police. Eet Gud had closed for Christmas and Friday then reopened on Saturday. Customers began arriving on Sunday at 7 a.m. They offered condolences but still wanted donuts. “Some of them placed their orders and were willing to wait in their cars for donuts and pastries,” Destribats said. “Of course, this incident is unnerving but thank God it was a burglary and not a robbery. Yes, something like this causes concern and makes employees look over their shoulders and worry. But, I’m from Trenton.
